Pro Tip: Comparing TaylorMade Stealth & SIM Drivers

What does one of the top-selling and top-performing driver companies from the last two decades do when they’ve just released a new big stick that’s immediately gone in the bag of some of the best in the world?

They totally redefine the driver category, of course.

The TaylorMade Stealth driver was the product of two decades of research and innovation and spawned the new era of the ‘Carbonwood’ – 60 layers of carbon in the face which helped make the club lighter and faster, increasing ball speed of both weekend warriors and guys like Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy.

Titanium was, of course, all the rage for TaylorMade drivers – and everyone else on the market – for 20 years. But the TaylorMade Stealth driver proved the brand could push the boundaries of what could help golfers get more distance.

The TaylorMade Stealth driver’s red carbon face (now available in a ‘Blackout’ version, too) delivers higher COR and more face geometry through a lighter yet larger face. Its 40 percent lighter than titanium and is 11 percent larger than the face of the SIM2 and SIM2 Max drivers.

Thanks to fine-tuned acoustic precision, TaylorMade’s engineers were able to produce a new driver that has a powerful sound and feel profile.

There are three versions of the TaylorMade Stealth driver. The original Stealth has 15 percent more MOI than previous TaylorMade drivers and is meant for mid-handicappers, the Stealth Plus is the lowest spinning of the three and meant for elite golfers, while the Stealth HD is a draw-bias effort and will help higher handicappers find more fairways more often.

The SIM2 still offers plenty in terms of both distance and forgiveness – it was, after all, the TaylorMade driver that maxed out its work with titanium and was an improvement on the SIM offering the year prior – and in some capacity, the TaylorMade Stealth echoes the performance from the SIM and SIM2, just with new material construction.

The TaylorMade SIM2 was designed for all players and what their key needs are off the tee: an increase in ball speed, the opportunity to shape shots, and enhanced forgiveness.

Both the TaylorMade Stealth and TaylorMade SIM2 boast Twist Face technology and a Thru-Slot Speed Pocket to help with speed. Neither the TaylorMade SIM or SIM2 had sliding weight technology – the Stealth Plus does, however, and would be a big advantage in investing in the new TaylorMade driver if all else was equal in your eyes.

The big difference between the two TaylorMade drivers is less about launch, speed, and feel – it’s instead about colour. The new TaylorMade Stealth’s red face could perhaps be jarring for some. When have you ever seen a red face on a driver! But the way TaylorMade has made the rest of the crown look clean and slick helps when it comes to off-setting whatever anxieties you may have when looking at a red-faced driver.

Both drivers are big on forgiveness, but the new TaylorMade Stealth line has so much fresh technology installed that it’s hard to ignore what kind of new benefits a golfer could get by leaning into the Carbon construction.

Still, the SIM2, which could get scooped up at great TaylorMade pre-owned prices, isn’t a driver to ignore.
