Pro Tip: PING's Short Game Enhancements in 2022

When it comes to game improvement, dialing in your scoring clubs is the easiest way to shooting lower numbers.

This year the short-game efforts from Ping are some of the brand’s best.

Adding the new Ping putters – from the PLD Milled line – and the new Ping Glide 4.0 wedges into your bag will hopefully get you hitting it close and rolling them in.

Ping, of course, introduced the iconic Answer model in the late 1960s and it’s been copied over and over again as inspiration for thousands of other putters. The new line of Ping putters comes after the introduction of the four new Putting Lab Design (PLD) models. Previously they had been Tour-only.

The new Ping putters are made from Milled 303 stainless steel. There are two blade and two mallet putters. The four designs of the new Ping putters are akin to what you’d see week-in and week-out when you watch the best in the world on TV.

The PLD program started in 2016 and refers, according to GolfWeek, to “an area deep inside Ping’s Phoenix headquarters.” Pros like Tony Finau, Brooke Henderson, and Viktor Hovland have had their strokes analyzed and putters tweaked there, and now the Tour-tested and Tour-proven Ping putters are available to golfers everywhere.

Each of the Ping milled putters in the PLD line boast a milling pattern that is focused on softening both the feel and sound at impact.

Ping Anser

The new Ping Anser has a matte-black finish, rounded corners, and softer ballast surfaces. The iconic Ping putter helps make squaring the face to the target easy for those with slight-arc strokes.

Ping Anser 2

The new Ping Anser 2 is similarly shaped to the Ping Anser but is slightly longer and narrower with sharp corners. There is a centre alignment line (the Ping Anser has no alignment aids).

Ping DS72 Mallet

One of two Ping mallet putters in the PLD line, the DS72 is inspired by Hovland, the multi-time PGA Tour winner. It boasts a double-bend shaft (helpful for those with a straight stroke) and looks similar to the Ping Anser but with a deeper shape to help with off-centre putts.

Ping Prime Tyne 4

Another Ping mallet putter in the PLD line, the Prime Tyne 4 has a distinctive design and balanced look. The flow neck hosel promotes a strong-arc stroke rotation.

To roll in a couple of putts with your new Ping putter, you first have to hit it on the green – and that’s where the new Ping wedges come in.

There are four models of the new Ping Glide wedges the ‘S’, ‘W’, ‘T’, and ‘Eye 2’ – a nod to a classic. They use new precision technology that helps to promote forgiveness, control, and feel. Multi-material constriction of the new Ping wedges allows for upwards of 36 percent more face contact. More texture has been applied to the face via face-blasted milled grooves. This offers golfers better spin performances and consistent launch patterns.

Each of the aforementioned models is specific to a grind type. ‘Eye 2’ (or just ‘E’) grind is the most unique, boasting a high-toe design and improved leading edge. Each grind in the new Ping Glide wedges line is designed to fit turf conditions and attack style.
