Callaway purchased the Ben Hogan brand 20 years ago and sold the company in 2012, however, it kept the rights to use several of the iconic Hogan brand names – including Apex.
The first Callaway Apex irons came along two years later alongside the Apex Pro – designed for better players.
The 2023 Callaway Apex Pro irons are meant for a low to mid-handicap golfer who want that player’s distance iron which also delivers plenty of forgiveness and assistance with shot-shaping.
At first glance, these new Callaway Golf irons resemble those wielded by Xander Schauffele and Jon Rahm – the Apex TCB – but with more game-improvement features included. Of the new Apex irons, the updated Callaway Apex Pro irons are the standout.
The Apex Pro redesign includes an innovative A.I. face architecture – the first Callaway Golf iron to feature a boost from A.I. The unique Flash Face Cup architecture in each iron helps to increase ball speed, while a massive tungsten energy core will help improve both launch characteristics and forgiveness.
The long irons (3-5) have the same thin 455 stainless steel cup face found in Callaway’s Paradym irons but in a more compact package while the CG in those long irons is lower to encourage a higher ball flight and the centre of gravity transitions upward for the mid irons (6-8) and even higher for the short irons (9-AW).
Two different metals are used in the face to help boost ball speed in the longer irons while also helping to improve control in the shorter irons.
“Through extensive testing and development, we found exactly where we wanted a cut-off (from scoring to distance clubs),” Brian Williams, Callaway’s vice president of R&D told Golf.com. “The 4 and 5-iron target distance, but as we pivot into the 6-iron through wedges, what we saw was more precision, slightly higher launch, and slightly higher spin.”
It's the first time in an Apex iron that Callaway has paired a hollow body club with forged carbon steel for a soft yet premium feel. The new progressive face design helps to enhance both distance and forgiveness while the short irons are even more reliable for scoring.
The new dynamic sole design in the Callaway Apex Pro irons actually boasts a pre-worn leading edge. That means they will cut through turf more efficiently and the trailing edge make a clean exit. There’s consistent contact, forgiveness, and distance – everything you’d look for in a game-improvement iron.
